Guildford Spectrum solar: nearly 1,200 rooftop panels to cut carbon emissions by 72 tonnes a year
guildford-dragon.comGuildford Spectrum is getting almost 1,200 solar panels on its roof as part of a project to cut the leisure centre's carbon emissions. The panels cover around 2,400 square metres and are expected to generate about 500,000 kWh of electricity a year, enough to meet around 12% of the building's annual electricity needs. The council says that should cut emissions by around 72 tonnes of CO2e a year. Work started in October 2026 and is part of wider investment in the site, which is run by Freedom Leisure on behalf of Guildford Borough Council. The project is a practical example of on-site renewables at a public venue, though the 12% share also shows the limits of rooftop solar for a high demand building like a leisure centre. The contract setup matters as much as the panel count. The council is paying for the solar array, while Freedom Leisure operates the centre, so the financial benefit depends on how the operating agreement treats electricity costs. That detail will decide whether projects like this get repeated across other council sites.
