Guernsey and Jersey electricity companies have signed a four-year contract with EDF to continue importing low-carbon electricity from the European grid starting January 2028. The deal extends a relationship that began with subsea cables in the 1980s and 2000, ensuring supply while reducing reliance on local fossil fuel backup generation. Officials say imported power costs less than on-island generation and helps buffer against wholesale price swings through forward purchasing. The agreement supports the islands' electrification push as households shift from fossil fuel heating and electric vehicle adoption grows. Jersey Electricity's CEO notes it provides supply visibility while allowing continued investment in network resilience. The new contract does not change the existing cable infrastructure but locks in terms for another four years, which could matter for future grid upgrades or demand growth.
