Groundwork BioAg has issued its first verified agricultural carbon credits, marking a shift from pipeline to active delivery in the voluntary carbon market. The company generated 19,568 verified carbon units under Verra's VM0042 standard, using its mycorrhizal inoculant Rootella to form mineral-associated organic matter that persists for centuries. The program expanded from 9,000 acres in 2023 to over 700,000 acres across the US Midwest and Canadian Prairies, with up to 70% of net proceeds returned to participating farmers. The issuance is notable because it targets durable soil carbon sequestration through fungal inoculation, a method that creates a stable carbon pool. Verra CEO Mandy Rambharos said the milestone shows the methodology working at scale. Groundwork BioAg CEO Alon Werber called it the holy grail of carbon dioxide removal: scalable, durable, and verifiable. The question now is whether the program can maintain quality as it continues to scale rapidly.
