Groundwater flow research at Ningaloo Reef may boost ocean carbon storage potential

The goal is to understand whether this natural flow helps seaweed grow and then bury carbon in the ocean floor for long term storage. The team sampled 33 groundwater sources and 54 ocean surface sites, using radon as a tracer to map where groundwater reaches the reef. This work is part of the Blue Carbon Seascapes project, funded by AIMS and BHP. If the data shows strong links between groundwater nutrients and carbon burial, it could open a new avenue for blue carbon credits. The research also highlights how natural systems already support carbon storage, which may inform conservation and coastal management decisions.
