GreenSquare has opened the first stage of SYD1, a data center campus in Western Sydney built by reusing a 1995 facility. Instead of demolishing the old structure, the company kept the existing slab and most of the building, moved the data halls to the ground floor, and installed high-density compute for AI workloads. The site now supports about 8,200 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs for first tenant Sharon AI. The numbers matter for anyone tracking embodied carbon. An independent review by TTW says the project retained 92% of the building's existing structural carbon and cut structural upfront carbon by 76% per square metre and 93% per kilowatt of IT capacity versus a new build. The design also targets PUE of 1.20 and water use below 0.1 litres per kWh, both better than NSW government benchmarks. A proposed 80MW second stage is endorsed by the state's Investment Delivery Authority.
