GreenSquare retrofits 1995 Sydney data centre into AI campus, cutting structural carbon by 76%
datacentremagazine.comGreenSquare's SYD1 in Norwest Business Park, Western Sydney, is the first stage of an AI data centre campus built from a 1995 facility. The retrofit kept 92 percent of the existing structural carbon, moved data halls to the ground floor, and added liquid-to-chip cooling. GreenSquare says the design targets a PUE of 1.20, well under the NSW benchmark of 1.25, and uses a closed loop that avoids evaporative cooling for about 96 percent of the year. The site is now hosting Sharon AI, which will deploy around 8,200 NVIDIA Blackwell Ultra GPUs. GreenSquare reports 76 percent lower structural upfront carbon per square metre and 93 percent lower carbon per kilowatt of IT capacity versus a new-build equivalent. A second stage of 80 MW has state government endorsement. The project is an example of extending the life of existing building stock instead of demolishing and rebuilding.
