Greenland Seaweed Forests as Deep Ocean Carbon Sinks

New research from an international team of scientists reveals how macroalgae forests off the coast of Greenland act as a carbon conveyor belt. By tracking seaweed rafts, researchers found that ocean currents transport floating vegetation hundreds of kilometers before it sinks into the deep ocean, locking away CO2 for at least a century. This study improves the understanding of how coastal seaweed contributes to the global carbon cycle. It highlights the role of surface cooling and ocean currents in moving atmospheric carbon into long term underwater reservoirs.
