Greenland Port Air Pollution 60-70x WHO Limits, Clean Arctic Alliance Calls for Shore Power and Polar Fuels
marinelink.comAir quality measurements at Ilulissat port in Greenland found particle concentrations 60 to 70 times higher than WHO recommended safe levels, with peaks above 200,000 particles per cubic centimeter. The Clean Arctic Alliance says port workers and residents face elevated risks of heart disease, lung disease, and cancer. Soot particles from ship engines also contribute to Arctic warming. The Alliance is pushing for electrification of port equipment and onshore power for vessels in Greenland, leveraging the country's renewable hydro, solar, and wind potential. It also backs a proposal at the IMO to require cleaner polar fuels like marine gas oil across the Arctic, since the newly adopted Northeast Atlantic Emission Control Area does not adequately address black carbon emissions. The HFO ban in Arctic waters remains incomplete until 2029.
