Aerial photos from Greenland show the Isunnguata Sermia glacier and the work of a Charles University team studying how melting ice releases greenhouse gases. Bacteria beneath the ice sheet consume organic matter and produce methane, which escapes through meltwater. The Greenland Ice Sheet has been melting at an accelerating rate in recent decades. The Cryoeco team is spending six weeks camped near Kangerlussuaq, collecting sediment and water samples to analyze carbon and organic content. They measure CO2 and methane levels using a spectrometer. The research aims to understand how subglacial microbial activity contributes to emissions as the ice retreats.
