Green Hydrogen Could Turn EU CBAM into a Clean Industry Win for India and Europe, Report Says
sarkaritel.comIndia and Europe can use the EU Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism as a springboard for clean industrial cooperation, according to a report carried by Sarkaritel. CBAM's definitive regime took effect on January 1, 2026, covering iron and steel, aluminium, cement, fertilisers, electricity and hydrogen. That means Indian exporters in those sectors now face a carbon price on embedded emissions unless they can show cleaner production. The report argues green hydrogen is the bridge. India is targeting 5 million tonnes per annum of green hydrogen capacity by 2030, with about 15 companies awarded 3 GW per year of electrolyser manufacturing capacity and 18 companies receiving incentives for 862,000 tonnes of green hydrogen production capacity. With steel capacity targeted at 300 million tonnes by 2030-31, the choice is whether new plants are built carbon-heavy and retrofitted later or designed clean from the start. The real measure of success, the report says, is installed electrolysers, contracted green hydrogen volumes, commissioned hydrogen-based industrial plants and recognised carbon certificates. Those outcomes will decide whether CBAM becomes a trade headache or a catalyst for low-carbon manufacturing.
