A new study from the University of Ioannina suggests Greece can exceed its 2050 wind energy target of 13 gigawatts by 30 percent without building in Natura 2000 protected areas. The research indicates that biodiversity focused spatial planning does not have to hinder the energy transition. By concentrating development in less sensitive zones, Greece can accommodate investor interest in onshore wind while preserving undisturbed ecosystems. This finding challenges the assumption that strict environmental regulations necessarily slow down renewable energy deployment.
