The Littleborough Flood Risk Management Scheme in Greater Manchester is serving as a test site for the Environment Agency's Decarbonisation Technology Accelerator. The project is trialing low-carbon steel, low-carbon concrete, and modern methods of construction to reduce embodied emissions in heavy infrastructure. With 1,800 cubic meters of concrete and 2,000 tonnes of steel sheet piles required for the flood reservoir, the project focuses on replacing traditional blast-furnace steel and standard concrete with lower-emission alternatives to meet 2030 carbon reduction targets.

Using a materials testing lab on site is the smart move here. With soft clays and mine water contamination, you cannot just guess the mix for low-carbon concrete. If the structural integrity fails on a Category A reservoir, the carbon savings won't matter.
