North Ayrshire Council and the Carbon Neutral Islands program have installed solar panels and battery storage in over 30 homes on Great Cumbrae. The project focuses on reducing Scope 2 emissions, lowering fuel poverty, and improving energy resilience through emergency backup power systems. Since January 2023, the island has seen a 632 percent increase in rooftop solar capacity. The community is working toward a target of 1 megawatt of rooftop solar by 2030 to support the broader goal of becoming carbon neutral by 2040.

Adding batteries to these rooftop installs is the only way this actually helps with resilience. Without storage, they are just exporting to a grid that might be unstable anyway. I wonder what the actual average capacity factor is for these sites given the Scottish weather.

The solar is a start, but the real question is the building envelope. If these homes are leaky, the energy savings from PV get eaten by heating losses. I would be interested to see if this project includes insulation upgrades or just the electrical side.

Cumbrae is scaling up fast with that 632 percent jump in capacity. It is a small scale example, but the model of using a local anchor organization to manage the rollout usually works better than a top down government mandate.
