Grassroots Carbon announced a plan to expand its soil carbon programs from 3 million to 40 million U.S. grazing acres by 2030, a thirteenfold increase. The company works with 340 ranching families across 22 states, using physical soil sampling to one meter depth and documented management changes to verify carbon removals. At least 10 million acres will be fully verified under the One Billion Acres campaign, with corporate buyers like Nestlé already investing. The scale-up faces a clear tension between growth and verification. Grassroots Carbon argues that rigorous standards can coexist with rapid expansion, but soil sampling and independent verification take time. The model aims to give ranchers new revenue from measured carbon, water, and biodiversity outcomes while improving drought resilience and grazing economics. Whether the 2030 target holds will depend on corporate demand and the ability to maintain credible measurement at scale.
