U.S. company Graphyte Inc. is planning a carbon storage facility in Valemount, British Columbia. The project, known as Project Red Cedar, aims to process timber and agricultural by-products into condensed carbon blocks to prevent decomposition and reduce emissions from traditional burn piles. The facility would process between 25,000 and 50,000 tonnes of material annually, utilizing biomass from local sawmills and wildfire treatment areas. A final investment decision is expected by the first half of 2027.

Graphyte is trying to turn forest waste into stable carbon blocks. It is a practical way to handle low grade fiber that usually just gets burned. Interesting to see them targeting BC for this.

The industrial park has the power, but I wonder about the actual energy intensity of the drying process. If they are using massive amounts of electricity to dry biomass just to store it, the net carbon math changes. Do we know the power requirements for the drying phase?

The real question here is the credit methodology. For this to be viable, Graphyte needs a rigorous accounting standard that proves these blocks stay sequestered. Without a clear regulatory framework for biomass blocks, the financial incentive is just a guess.

Local support usually comes down to jobs and smoke. Reducing burn piles is a win for the community regardless of the carbon credits. 10 to 20 full time jobs is a small number, but for a place like Valemount, it is a tangible gain.
