Graphene Square to mass produce graphene heating elements for home appliances at its Pohang plant
mk.co.krGraphene Square, founded by Seoul National University professor Hong Byung-hee, is moving graphene from lab research into consumer products. The company completed a 42 billion won production plant in Pohang Blue Valley National Industrial Complex, with capacity for 300,000 square meters of CVD graphene film per year. It says that is more than current global demand and plans to reach 70 to 80 percent utilization early next year as home appliance partners ramp up orders. The first commercial products are small appliances. A graphene multi-cooker is said to run on about 600W, roughly half the power of existing models, with medium-infrared heating that delivers energy more directly to food. The company also targets hair beauty devices in early 2027 and is developing EUV pellicles for semiconductor lithography, with mass production aimed at 2029. The bigger question is whether the claimed efficiency gains hold up in volume production and whether the market for graphene heating elements is large enough to fill the plant. The company says it can recycle up to 97 percent of the copper used in production, which matters for the material's environmental profile.
