Gotion and Volkswagen invest 3.2B euros in EU battery plants as carbon footprint rules tighten
eu.36kr.comGotion High-Tech and Volkswagen's PowerCo are investing 3.222 billion euros in three joint venture sites in Spain, Slovakia, and Morocco. The deal gives Gotion a route into European battery production and a 100,000 ton LFP cathode plant in Morocco, while PowerCo gets a working partner for its delayed Valencia factory. The structure matters: PowerCo controls the 29.1 GWh Valencia plant, Gotion controls the 8.4 GWh Slovakia plant and the Morocco cathode output. The harder part is compliance. EU carbon footprint declarations for storage batteries start February 18, 2026, and the Digital Battery Passport follows in 2027. The rules reject common green power certificates, so Gotion must rebuild supply chain data for power mix, raw materials, due diligence, and recycled content. Gotion's overseas gross margin was 18.05% in H1 2026, above domestic 14.34%, but capex remains high and non-recurring gains are masking part of net profit. The long-term test is whether Gotion can sell beyond Volkswagen.
