Google and other developers reportedly miscalculated carbon emissions for planned AI data centers in the UK. By comparing annual emissions against a five year national carbon budget, the companies underestimated their environmental impact by a factor of five. These facilities in Thurrock, North Weald, and North Lincolnshire could collectively contribute over 1% of the UK carbon budget by 2033. This level of emissions is comparable to the total output of a mid sized city like Bristol.
