Google repurposes old smartphones into low-carbon data centers to cut embodied carbon and e-waste

The process strips phones down to the motherboard, removes batteries and displays, and runs a lightweight Linux OS with Kubernetes. A cluster of 25 to 50 phones can match a server for lightweight workloads like coursework hosting and coding platforms. The key environmental benefit is avoiding the embodied carbon of manufacturing new server hardware. The project targets a 2,000-phone pilot cluster at UCSD. While not suited for heavy AI training, the approach could offer universities and labs a low-cost, eco-friendly way to build private clouds and reduce e-waste.
