Google is backing a research project with UC San Diego to turn retired Pixel smartphones into low-carbon computing clusters. By removing batteries, screens, and casings, the motherboards are linked together and managed like a mini data centre. A cluster of 25 to 50 phones can match a modern server for certain workloads, and researchers aim to build a 2,000-phone cluster for university courses. The goal is to cut both e-waste and the carbon emissions from manufacturing new servers. Most people replace phones every four years, leaving powerful processors unused. Google sees this as a way to handle everyday cloud tasks like web services and grading systems, not the heavy GPU clusters used for training AI models. The project focuses on practical reuse rather than replacing Nvidia chips.
