Google, Georgia Power Nuclear Uprate Deal Adds 96 MW for Data Centers
sg.finance.yahoo.comGoogle has agreed to support nuclear uprates at Georgia Power's Vogtle and Hatch plants, a move that could add about 96 MW of carbon-free capacity to the state grid. The deal still needs approval from the Georgia Public Service Commission. Google would buy power through a proposed Nuclear Uprate tariff and receive zero-emission credits tied to the added output. The arrangement is part of a broader push by tech companies to secure reliable electricity for data centers without adding emissions. Georgia Power says the deal could generate about $900 million in customer benefits over the life of the units. Nuclear uprates modify existing equipment like turbines and cooling systems, so they avoid the long lead times and cost of new reactors. The PSC review will determine whether the tariff structure keeps costs off non-participating customers.
