Google funds 200,000-hectare enhanced rock weathering and methane reduction project in Brazil
newsbytesapp.comGoogle has announced its largest carbon removal deal to date, supporting a 200,000-hectare project in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, run by Terradot. The project uses enhanced rock weathering to accelerate CO2 capture and also targets methane emissions from rice paddies. The dual focus on both carbon dioxide and methane is meant to address near-term and long-term climate impacts. Google aims to secure 1 million metric tons of methane abatement credits by 2030 and carbon removal credits by 2040. The model could be expanded to other rice-growing regions in Brazil, India, and Vietnam. With COP31 expected to emphasize methane reductions, this project may serve as a template for future agricultural carbon programs.
