Google Buys Stegra Green Steel Certificates: How Book-and-Claim Ties Hydrogen Steel to Data Centers
neoteo.comGoogle has agreed to purchase environmental attribute certificates tied to up to 91,000 metric tons of steel from Stegra's planned Boden plant in Sweden. The deal covers the environmental value of the steel, not the physical metal, which can still move through conventional markets. Stegra's book-and-claim model separates the green claim from the material, allowing Google to claim lower-carbon steel for its data center infrastructure even though the steel itself may be sold elsewhere. Stegra plans to produce the steel using renewable electricity, green hydrogen, and an electric arc furnace, potentially cutting production emissions by up to 95% compared to traditional blast furnaces. The Boden facility is expected to start operations by 2027, with an initial output that will include the volumes covered by this agreement. Google says lower-carbon materials could reduce embodied carbon in data center construction by up to 40%, though the certificates themselves only apply to the production process, not Google's operational footprint.
