Google has agreed to buy environmental attribute certificates from Swedish steelmaker Stegra, covering up to 91,000 tonnes of green steel in the first year. The deal lets Google claim the low-carbon value of steel produced at Stegra's Boden plant without taking physical delivery. Stegra has not disclosed the contract value. EACs separate the environmental benefit from the physical steel, so the certificate can be sold with the steel or on its own. Stegra CEO Henrik Henriksson says large global buyers like Google can help shift the market toward lower-emission products. The companies plan to expand volumes over the life of the agreement.
