Google Buys 1 Million Tonnes of Methane Reduction and 1 Million Tonnes of CDR from Terradot's Brazil Rice Project
carboncredits.comGoogle has signed its largest carbon removal deal to date with Terradot, covering over 200,000 hectares of rice farmland in southern Brazil. The project uses alternate wetting and drying to cut methane emissions and enhanced rock weathering to permanently remove CO2. Google will purchase 1 million tonnes of methane reduction by 2030 and 1 million tonnes of permanent carbon removal by 2040, with the company stressing that the two volumes are not equivalent in climate impact. The agreement is the largest publicly announced enhanced rock weathering project so far and the first to combine near-term methane cuts with long-term carbon removal in one farming system. It builds on Google's earlier purchase of 200,000 tonnes of ERW credits from Terradot in 2024. The project faces challenges in measurement, verification, and cost, which remains above $100 per tonne for the removal side. However, if Terradot can deliver at scale, the model could be replicated across major rice-growing regions worldwide.
