Google and UC San Diego are building a data center from 2,000 discarded Pixel smartphones. They strip out the display, battery, and chassis, keeping only the motherboard with processor, memory, and storage. The boards are clustered into a general-purpose computing platform expected to go online in fall 2026. The goal is to reuse perfectly functional chips instead of mining and manufacturing new hardware for AI workloads. This approach tackles two problems at once. Electronic waste from phones is a growing global issue, and the AI industry's demand for new chips has a high carbon footprint from manufacturing. By repurposing old phone processors, Google aims to deliver low-carbon computing power without the environmental cost of building new server hardware. The project is still a pilot, but it points to a practical way to cut embodied emissions in the data center sector.
