Researchers at UC San Diego, with support from Google, are building a computing platform from retired smartphones. They extract the motherboards, remove batteries and screens, and cluster them into servers running Linux and Kubernetes. The goal is to reduce embodied carbon by reusing hardware that would otherwise be e-waste. Early benchmarks show that 25 to 50 phones can match the performance of a modern server for many tasks.
