Google-backed pilot shows hourly carbon accounting for US battery storage using granular certificates
energy-storage.newsGoogle, esVolta, LevelTen Energy, and Quintrace completed a three-month pilot that uses hourly granular certificates to track renewable energy through battery storage. The pilot involved two Texas BESS projects, totaling 340MW/680MWh, and shifted 9.2GWh of solar power to evening hours to match Google's consumption. The goal is to give storage operators a carbon-based revenue stream while supporting hourly reporting requirements from SBTi and GHG Protocol. The contract structure allowed Google to time-shift its existing environmental attributes without tolling the batteries, so operators kept dispatch control. Quintrace's software verified each hour against the EnergyTag standard and used dynamic loss calculations to ensure only delivered clean energy was claimed. This approach could help integrate storage into corporate carbon accounting as hourly matching becomes the norm.
