The project is expected online in 2029 under a 20-year tolling agreement. This is one of the first commercial-scale CO2 battery deployments in the US. The technology uses grid power to compress and store CO2, then expands it to generate electricity, offering a lithium-free alternative for long-duration storage. Arizona's growing energy demand, driven partly by AI and data centers, makes it a key test market. The project could signal whether CO2 batteries become a viable option for grid reliability and renewable integration.
