Researchers at the University of California, San Diego, backed by Google, are turning retired smartphones into low-carbon cloud computing clusters. By removing motherboards from old Pixel devices and running Linux, they aim to build a 2,000-phone datacenter that reduces both embodied carbon from manufacturing and operational emissions. The project targets university workloads like Jupyter notebooks and grading systems, with early tests showing performance comparable to AWS at lower cost. This approach directly tackles the environmental cost of e-waste and new hardware production. Each phone's motherboard accounts for about 50% of its total embodied carbon, and reusing it avoids raw material extraction. The full system is expected to go live in Autumn 2026, serving as a testbed for long-term reliability of consumer-grade hardware in datacenters.
