Google and UC San Diego turn retired Pixel phones into low-carbon data center servers

By stripping out displays, batteries, and chassis, they reuse the motherboard and SoC, avoiding the carbon emissions from manufacturing new chips. A 20-phone cluster handled peak grading workloads for 75 students with lower latency than commercial cloud backends. A 2,000-phone cluster is planned for the upcoming academic year. This approach targets educational and small-scale computing, not AI training. It avoids the embedded carbon of new hardware and extends the useful life of devices that still have strong single-core performance. The project shows a practical path to lower carbon compute for institutions that don't need high-end server specs.
