Google and Stegra partner on green hydrogen steel plant in Sweden to cut emissions by up to 95%

The plant will use renewable electricity to produce green hydrogen, which reacts with iron ore to make iron, replacing coal in the traditional blast furnace process. Stegra estimates this can cut emissions by up to 95% compared to conventional steelmaking, and the output is designed to meet the IEA's definition of near-zero emissions steel. Under the agreement, Google will receive environmental attribute certificates (EACs) for up to 91,000 metric tons of steel from Stegra's first year of production. These certificates help drive demand for low-carbon materials, address construction emissions, and finance early-stage clean technology. Google plans to use this steel in data center infrastructure, estimating a potential 40% reduction in embodied carbon. The company also notes that in 2025 it integrated low-carbon concrete, steel, or both in over 20 construction projects.
