Google and Fortum Sign 22-Year Nuclear PPA to Keep Finland's Loviisa Plant Running to 2050
carboncredits.comGoogle has signed a 22-year power purchase agreement with Finnish utility Fortum for up to 50% of the generation capacity at the Loviisa nuclear plant. The deal supports a roughly 1 billion euro investment program to extend the plant's operating life to 2050, including a planned capacity upgrade. Loviisa currently supplies about 10% of Finland's electricity, so keeping it online avoids a major loss of firm, fossil-free capacity after 2030. Beyond nuclear, the companies are exploring renewable energy, flexibility services, and battery storage. Google has already contracted a 94 MW battery storage system near Kajaani and plans to invest 13 billion euros in Finland during 2027 and 2028. Finland already gets 96% of its electricity from CO2 neutral sources, so this deal is less about cleaning up a dirty grid and more about using long-term corporate demand to keep existing clean capacity running and support new projects.
