Google and Constellation Nuclear Deal Adds 890 MW to PJM Grid
broadbandbreakfast.comGoogle and Constellation have signed a 20 year power purchase agreement that funds $4.3 billion in upgrades to 11 nuclear units in Illinois, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The work will add 890 MW of firm, carbon-free capacity to the PJM grid starting in 2028, without waiting for new reactor construction or interconnection approvals. A separate 15 year deal covers 2,700 MW of Constellation's existing PJM fleet to keep those plants economically viable. The deal matters because data center demand is colliding with interconnection queues across the Mid-Atlantic. Nuclear uprates are one of the few ways to add reliable capacity on a faster timeline. Google also tied the agreement to PJM's Bring Your Own Power framework and the White House ratepayer protection pledge. The real test will be whether the added capacity actually shows up on schedule and whether the costs stay off residential bills.
