A group of tech companies including Google and Anthropic has committed nearly $915 million to purchase carbon removal credits through Frontier, the advance market commitment launched in 2022. The funding is meant to give early stage carbon removal developers guaranteed future demand, helping them secure financing and scale production. Frontier aggregates corporate buyers and channels purchases toward technologies like direct air capture, biomass carbon removal, enhanced weathering, and ocean based methods. The commitment is one of the largest collective demand signals for the carbon removal sector so far. Supporters argue that strong purchase guarantees are needed to bring carbon removal to the gigaton scale required for global net zero targets. Industry participants stress that carbon removal should complement, not replace, emissions reductions at source. The announcement reinforces the role of large technology companies as key sources of capital for early stage climate technologies.
