Gold Standard Issues First Soil Carbon Credits in Europe for French and Belgian Farms
carboncredits.comSouth Pole and Gaïago announced the first issuance of Gold Standard soil organic carbon credits from the European Soil Revitalization Programme, covering 6,000 verified hectares in France and Belgium. The program includes 727 farms and could expand to more than 39,282 hectares, with an estimated 264,174 tCO2e of removals over the first crediting period. Gold Standard's Soil Organic Carbon Framework allows field measurements, models, or approved defaults. The project uses biostimulants, reduced tillage, and cover crops. Developers report the first cohort removed about 3.1 tCO2e per hectare per year over three years, while the full program forecast is around 2.5 tCO2e per hectare per year. The issuance comes as the EU builds its own carbon farming certification under the CRCF. Soil carbon credits have sold at premium prices, including Microsoft's deal with Indigo and a South Pole facilitated sale at about €50 per tonne. Scaling beyond 6,000 hectares while keeping MRV credible remains the main test.
