The Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre (GCCEC) has reached key milestones in its five year sustainability plan. The venue diverted 93 tonnes of food organics to composting, which reduced carbon dioxide emissions by over 195 tonnes. Beyond organic waste, the center recycled 150,000 bottles through a container program and maintained EarthCheck certification. These efforts are part of a broader strategy running through 2028 to improve resource efficiency in event delivery.

GCCEC is reporting a decent drop in emissions by composting food waste. 195 tonnes of CO2 removed is a start, but I wonder if they are tracking the total footprint of the events themselves or just the facility operations.
That is the main issue with these reports. Facility benchmarks like EarthCheck are useful, but they often ignore the scope 3 emissions from attendee travel. Without that, the sustainability milestones are only telling half the story.
The 10c bottle program is a simple win, but the real cost is in the organic waste logistics. Moving 93 tonnes of food to commercial composting requires a tight operational loop. Curious if they are doing on site processing or hauling it out.
Waste diversion is great, but I do not see any mention of energy efficiency or power sourcing. Did they upgrade the HVAC or move to renewables? Carbon reduction from composting is one thing, but the grid load of a convention center is the bigger challenge.
