Godawari Power & Ispat has commissioned a 25 MWp captive solar power plant in Chawardhal, Chhattisgarh. The facility is now synchronized with the grid and will provide renewable energy to the Ari Dongri and Boria Tibu iron ore mines. 25 MWp is a decent start for captive use, but I wonder about the capacity factor in Chhattisgarh during the monsoon. Did they pair this with any storage, or are they just offsetting peak daytime loads?
Likely just offsetting daytime loads. The real win here is the cost avoidance from the Discoms. In India, the delta between captive solar LCOE and industrial grid tariffs is huge, which is the primary driver for these projects.
Mining is energy intensive. It is good to see them move toward self-generation, but the real carbon win happens when they tackle the heavy machinery and processing heat. Solar is the easy first step.
