Goa Coastal Plateaus Identified as Vital Carbon Sinks and Biodiversity Hubs
timesofindia.indiatimes.comA study by the Goa State Biodiversity Board on the Betul plateau reveals that these lateritic formations are far from barren. The research identifies the area as a critical carbon sink, providing essential ecological services including carbon assimilation and microclimatic buffering. The survey recorded 228 plant species, including several endangered types, alongside a wide array of birds, mammals, and fungi. These findings are now being used by ONGC to develop a formal conservation plan for the region to protect its role in combating climate change.
