Global South Leads Energy Transition with New Power Cooperation Initiative at Hong Kong Forum
chinadailyasia.comThe Global South Power Partnership Development Forum, held in Hong Kong and co-initiated by China Southern Power Grid, brought together over 20 countries to advance energy transition and sustainable development. Nearly 40 utility enterprises from Asia, Africa, and Latin America launched a cooperation initiative to build power infrastructure, adopt low-carbon technology, and boost green investment. The initiative aims to create safe, reliable, and smart power systems across developing regions. Hong Kong's environment secretary noted the city's carbon emissions have dropped 27% from 2014 levels, with less than 20% of electricity from coal and about 25% from nuclear energy. Speakers emphasized that Global South countries are not just participating but shaping the global energy transition, calling for more collaboration on infrastructure integration and common electricity markets to facilitate clean energy adoption and climate action.
