A new international study involving experts from 54 countries highlights major uncertainties in how peatlands function as carbon sinks. The research emphasizes that while peatlands are vital for climate action, basic questions about their resilience and response to restoration remain unanswered. In Ireland, where peatlands cover 21% of the land and store over 2,200 mega tonnes of carbon, the study points out that simple rewetting is not enough. Better data on carbon fluxes and remote sensing is needed to ensure restoration projects actually reduce emissions and support biodiversity.
