Global CCS Institute: 113 CCS projects operating worldwide as CO2 transport and storage networks expand
worldcement.comThe Global CCS Institute's latest Global Status of CCS report counts 113 commercial carbon capture and storage projects in operation worldwide, more than quadruple the number in 2021. The report says cumulative CO2 stored underground since 1996 has passed 400 million tonnes, and current construction could push annual capture capacity past 100 million tonnes once projects enter service. The report highlights a shift from standalone capture plants toward transport networks, storage hubs, and commercial frameworks that link emitters to permanent storage. The Americas lead with 48 million tonnes per year of operating capture capacity, while Europe's pipeline could reach 141 million tonnes per year if projects move forward. Northern Europe is already running cross-border CO2 transport deals, including Yara's Dutch ammonia facility storing CO2 in Norway through Northern Lights. CCS is becoming a systems game. The Institute argues that policy, financing, and connected infrastructure need to move together to support investment confidence. The full report is available at globalccsinstitute.com.
