In an interview with Diari ARA after receiving the Ramon Margalef Award, Pep Canadell, executive director of the Global Carbon Project, says the world is at 1.4 degrees Celsius of warming and will hit 1.5 within five years. He argues the cheap, mature path is full electrification of transport, homes, and industry below 800 degrees, not carbon capture, which he calls expensive and unviable at scale. Canadell points to fast solar growth, with the third terawatt installed in 18 months, and examples like China's EV market and Pakistan's rooftop solar boom. He also warns that natural carbon sinks are showing cracks, and that cutting methane, especially leaks from oil and gas, can reduce warming faster than CO2 cuts alone. On Catalonia, he says the region is late on mitigation and still debating where to put solar panels and wind turbines.
