Glen Mhor Hotel and Uile-bheist Brewstillery Wins Global Green Award for River Source Heat Pump That Cuts 250 Tonnes of Carbon Annually

The Glen Mhor Hotel in Inverness and its on-site Uile-bheist Distillery and Brewery have won a World Green Apple Environment Award for a 7.5 million pound river source Energy Centre that eliminated their gas grid connection. The system powers heating, hot water, whisky, and beer production while removing roughly 250 tonnes of carbon per year. Solar panels supplement the setup. The project was one of only 29 awards given globally and will be featured in a book distributed to governments and universities. Co-owner Victoria Erasmus noted the challenge of building in a historic conservation area without an existing blueprint. The hotel and brewstillery now operate with embedded sustainability practices. This case shows how hospitality and alcohol production can decarbonize using site specific renewable heat, though replicating the river source model depends on local water access and upfront capital.
