Glasgow firm Macfarlane Packaging develops software to cut packaging waste and carbon emissions
heraldscotland.comMacfarlane Packaging, based in Glasgow, has launched new software with Lancaster University to help businesses reduce packaging waste and lower carbon emissions. The tool identifies excess packaging and recommends more efficient materials, cutting material use by an average of 15% per the company's tests. It also helps reduce shipping costs and transport emissions, and supports compliance with packaging regulations like EPR and the EU's PPWR. The software powers Macfarlane's Packaging Minimiser service, which assesses packaging needs in days instead of weeks. It targets manufacturers, distributors, and retailers with high-volume operations. With UK packaging output at 6.8 million tonnes in 2024, the potential material savings exceed one million tonnes. The project received UK Government funding through an Applied Research Collaborations grant.
