GKN Aerospace Completes H2GEAR Programme Advancing Hydrogen-Electric Flight Technology
fuelcellsworks.comGKN Aerospace has successfully completed the H2GEAR programme, a 54 million pound project focused on developing key technologies for hydrogen-powered zero-carbon flight. The programme advanced cryogenic drive systems, high power electrical network architectures, and fuel-cell propulsion system integration. It was co-funded by the UK Aerospace Technology Institute, Department for Business and Trade, and Innovate UK, with partners including Intelligent Energy, Aeristech, and several universities. A notable outcome is the launch of HP Drive Technologies Ltd., a joint venture between GKN Aerospace and the University of Nottingham to industrialize cryogenic drive systems for aerospace and other sectors. Follow-on initiatives H2FlyGHT in the UK and ICEFLIGHT in the Netherlands aim to accelerate multi-megawatt hydrogen-electric propulsion systems. The programme reduces technical risk for future commercial zero-carbon flight applications and strengthens UK capability in hydrogen aerospace engineering.
