A new report from GHGSat shows its satellites detected 25 million metric tons of methane emissions across 127 countries in 2025. The company recorded 28,224 methane plumes, with oil and gas accounting for 49% of emissions, waste at 29%, and mining at 16%. GHGSat says satellite measurements exceed emissions reported to the UN by 15%, pointing to systematic underreporting. The report highlights that methane has more than 80 times the warming potency of CO2 over 20 years. Top emitting regions were Asia, Eurasia, and North America. Landfills were flagged as persistent emitters that inventories often miss. GHGSat now operates 15 satellites and added four more in 2025. For carbon markets and climate policy, the data reinforces that relying solely on self-reported emissions numbers is risky. Satellite monitoring provides independent verification that can help target mitigation efforts more effectively, especially for super-emitters above 100 kg per hour.
