Ghana hosts South-South REDD+ workshop to help West African countries access forest carbon finance
ghanabusinessnews.comGhana hosted a South-South REDD+ workshop in Accra with Benin, The Gambia, Guinea, Guinea-Bissau, and Sierra Leone, focused on preparing West African countries to access results-based climate finance for reducing deforestation. The sessions covered forest monitoring, reference emission levels, safeguards, and national REDD+ strategies, the core systems required under the Warsaw Framework before countries can receive payments. Ghana's Forestry Commission reported that this readiness phase took years of coordination and capacity building, but it paid off. Verified results from the Ghana Cocoa Forest REDD+ Programme have earned more than $21 million from the World Bank's Carbon Fund. Participating countries are expected to leave with national climate finance roadmaps, with support from FAO and engagement with funds like the LEAF Coalition and the Tropical Forest Forever Facility.
