Gevo has delivered 10,000 carbon dioxide removal credits from its North Dakota bioenergy with carbon capture and storage facility. The credits were sold through ClimeFi to an unnamed corporate buyer and represent 10,000 tonnes of captured CO2. The ethanol plant has now removed and stored 700,000 tonnes of CO2 since BECCS operations started in June 2022. Gevo's North Dakota facility injects around 180,000 tonnes of biogenic CO2 per year into a Class VI well. The company says the sale supports its carbon business alongside low-carbon fuels and is targeting over $30 million in annual revenue from existing operations. Gevo also acquired Red Trail Energy's ethanol and CCS assets in February 2025 and sold its first carbon removal credits in July 2025. ADM has entered the CDR market with an 800,000 tonne per year CCS facility in Nebraska through Puro.earth. With US ethanol production capacity at 17.4 billion gallons per year, more ethanol plants could follow the same BECCS path.
