Germany has notified the European Commission of its plan to voluntarily cancel carbon allowances linked to the closure of 14 electricity generation installations. This move follows the shutdown of these plants in 2024, which were covered under the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). The cancellation process follows specific EU regulations to ensure that allowances from decommissioned plants are removed from the market. This prevents unused credits from being traded or used elsewhere, maintaining the integrity of the bloc's carbon pricing mechanism.
